Serval Cats - Behavior and Feeding Habits

Serval Cats come out mainly at night, so they are hard to notice. Little is known about their habits, yet their feeding habits and life style are studied well enough to state that this is one of the most wonderful species found on vast territories of East Africa. The Serval Cat relies on its perfect eyesight and hearing when hunting. A fascinating fact is that the species can detect its prey when it is moving underground. The hunting style of the Serval Cat is spectacular. These felines will stalk with their head above the plane of grass . They watch and listen for the prey to move. Then, they approach the prey and leap on it. Serval Cats are known to play with the catch before eating it. Serval Cats are territorial animals having a home range of about 5 square miles. They mark the territory with urine. Serval Cats feed on a variety of foods including small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. They are efficient hunters and almost a half of their attempts are a success.

Serval Cats - Reproduction and Growth

Males and females form pairs only during the mating season. The gestation period is about 75 days. The litter is usually from two to four cubs. The female takes care of the young and protects them from predators by changing the hiding place frequently. The newborn are blind, yet grow quickly and once they have acquired hunting skills, they leave the mother. The species faces threats from the leopard, hyena, and hunting dogs. Serval Cats live for about 20 years.
